OptiLIGHT® IPL Dry Eye Treatment

A Brighter Solution for Dry, Irritated Eyes

Are you constantly reaching for eye drops because your eyes feel dry, burning, gritty, watery, or irritated? The problem may be more than a lack of tears.

One of the most common causes of dry eye is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. The meibomian glands are tiny glands located along the eyelids that produce the protective oil layer of your tears. When these glands become blocked or do not function properly, tears can evaporate too quickly, leading to chronic dry eye symptoms.

Our office offers OptiLIGHT® by Lumenis, an advanced light-based treatment designed to improve signs of dry eye disease associated with MGD.

What Is OptiLIGHT?

OptiLIGHT uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and patented Optimal Pulse Technology to deliver precise pulses of light to the skin below and around the eyes while the eyes remain protected.

The treatment targets factors that contribute to the cycle of inflammation associated with MGD and evaporative dry eye.

OptiLIGHT is the first IPL treatment FDA-authorized specifically for improving signs of dry eye disease due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

How Can OptiLIGHT Help Dry Eye?

OptiLIGHT treatment can help address several factors associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and chronic dry eye. Treatment may help:

  • Reduce inflammation associated with dry eye

  • Improve meibomian gland function

  • Improve the quality and stability of the tear film

  • Improve tear breakup time

  • Reduce abnormal blood vessels that can contribute to inflammation

  • Decrease dry eye symptoms and improve overall eye comfort

Instead of simply adding temporary moisture to the eye, OptiLIGHT allows us to address an important underlying component of evaporative dry eye.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

OptiLIGHT is a quick, non-invasive treatment performed in our office.

Protective eye shields are used during the procedure, and a series of controlled light pulses are applied to the treatment area.

A typical treatment takes approximately 10-15 minutes. The recommended initial treatment protocol generally consists of four sessions spaced approximately 2-4 weeks apart.

There is little to no downtime, and most patients can return to their normal daily activities following treatment.

Is OptiLIGHT Right for Me?

You may be a candidate for OptiLIGHT if you experience:
Burning or stinging eyes

  • Gritty or sandy sensations

  • Red or irritated eyes

  • Excessive watering

  • Fluctuating or blurry vision

  • Contact lens discomfort

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Frequent dependence on artificial tears

  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

  • Evaporative dry eye

Because dry eye can have several different causes, the first step is a comprehensive dry eye evaluation. Our doctor will evaluate your tear film, eyelids and meibomian glands to determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend an individualized treatment plan.

Treat More Than the Symptoms

Artificial tears can provide temporary relief, but chronic dry eye often requires a more comprehensive approach.

OptiLIGHT gives us another way to address the inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction contributing to evaporative dry eye.
